New construction and renovation of existing facility.
Address: 1300 West 300 North, Salt Lake City, UT
Narrative:
In 2006, Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County commissioned a review of the recreation needs of the northwest area of the County, and the development of a master plan for the Northwest Multipurpose Center to meet the needs identified by the study.
Salt Lake County is constructing a new facility to house Northwest’s indoor recreation activities. The new facility will lie to the north of the existing community center, and will provide Northwest residents with access to a new lap pool, leisure pool, locker rooms, family changing rooms, a full court gymnasium, an exercise/aerobics room, a fitness center, and a drop-in child care area. Amenities in the new facility will replace and expand upon those in the existing community center, and will provide patrons with a safe, comfortable and accessible environment for indoor recreating.
The existing Community Center building will receive mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades, along with some architectural upgrades and parking resurfacing, and will continue to house the Northwest Daycare, Senior Center, Food Bank and community multi-purpose spaces. Spaces in the existing building currently occupied by recreation functions may be adopted by other community functions within the building. Together, the new recreation center and the existing community building will function as the Northwest’s Community Center.
In 2007 Salt Lake County adopted a new set of design and construction standards and procedures. The Northwest Recreation Center will be constructed under the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System which is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
